Fake Fortnite Pirate Token Compass Video Spreads Misinformation
A viral video promising a compass to locate rare Pirate Shop Tokens is a hoax, Epic Games has warned players.

A viral video claiming a compass can locate Fortnite's rare Pirate Shop Tokens is a hoax, and Epic Games has warned players about scams related to the item.
The fake video, posted by a Facebook page called Uncle Frank's Factory, shows a player with a large blue and gold compass on screen that directed them to a chest, and when they opened the chest, it gave them a Pirate Token.
"No, you cannot get the compass in Fortnite for the Pirate Shop Token because, just like Captain Jack Sparrow, it's a thing of myth; it does not exist, which means you cannot obtain it," one outlet reported.
Epic Games publicly warned players to be aware of Fortnite Pirate Shop Token scams that have started to spring up all over the internet, which include the 'magical' compass.
The Pirate Shop Token is an exceedingly rare item found only by opening chests during matches in the Treasure Hunters mini-season.
Getting one of these is essentially like winning the lottery, as they're exceedingly rare and only found through opening chests during matches.
Acquiring one grants access to the Pirate Shop, which allows players to get everything in the item shop for free for two 14-day windows.
Redington Cybersport reported earlier this month that the rare prize grants two 14-day windows to claim V-Buck items for free.
The in-game HUD compass only shows direction and does not reveal chest locations.
"You can use the HUD compass in Battle Royale and Fortnite Zero Build, but it only tells you the direction you are headed," the notes state. "It does not reveal the location of any Treasure Chests in Fortnite, especially not the one that could contain the Pirate Shop Token."
While no compass exists, players can use legitimate methods to improve their odds.
The main way to get a lot of chests with good odds fast is by opening Vaults.
There is also an exploit involving Explosive Cannon Balls.
"What you need to do is get your hands on some Explosive Cannon Balls and head to a Vault," the notes state. "It doesn't matter if you have the key or not. Once there, throw the items either side of the door and the AoE on the explosion is enough that it will destroy most, if not all of the chests inside."
Destroying a chest via explosion counts as opening it, so if the chest would have dropped a Pirate Shop Access Token, the player will still receive it.
"To get the Token, you only need to have 'opened' the chest, and destroying it via an explosion counts for this, so even if you can't grab the loot, if the chest would have dropped a Pirate Shop Access Token, you'll still get it."
Similar to the "Gas Clan Fortnite Method," which allegedly makes it easier to obtain the Pirate Shop Token, both it and the compass are non-existent.
The Treasure Hunters mini-season launched on November 1.
