Team Vitality Upsets Global Esports 2-1 at Valorant Champions 2026
The EMEA fourth seed survived a chaotic Summit decider to defeat the Pacific first seed in their opening group stage match in Shanghai.
Team Vitality defeated Pacific first seed Global Esports 2-1 in their opening group stage match at Valorant Champions 2026 in Shanghai.
The EMEA fourth seed won 13-10 on Bind and 13-11 on Summit, while Global Esports took Ascent 13-9.
Vitality built a commanding 10-4 lead on their map pick, Bind, before closing it out 13-10 after PROFEK had a standout clutch moment that ended GE's comeback hopes.
Global Esports leveled the series on Ascent, where PatMen delivered two crucial four-kill rounds, including a round 2 eco clutch that neutralized Vitality's pistol round momentum.
PatMen finished the map with a 1.59 rating, while Jamppi had an ace that briefly gave Vitality a pulse.
The decider on Summit was chaotic, with Vitality running Chronicle on Neon for only the second time in his career at this level.
Chronicle posted a 1.17 rating on the map, including a 1.67 on the defensive half.
Derke's Chamber was exceptional throughout, producing multiple highlight-reel plays, while xavi8k matched him at times, finishing Summit with a 1.38 rating.
The teams were dead even at halftime before Vitality won the pistol and bonus round after the half-switch.
Vitality reached match point at 12-8 before Global Esports clawed back to 12-11, forcing a final round of chaos that Vitality narrowly won.
"We scrambled a bit... they were more sure of themselves and what they wanted to do and we weren't," Global Esports coach Platoon said.
"Overall it was a good start for us... we just needed a bit more of the looseness towards the end, but I think it's fairly expected," Vitality coach PAL said.
Global Esports player xavi8k pointed to the cross-regional experience gap.
"Usually in APAC, rounds don't go to 20 seconds, 10 seconds... going into our next game, we have the experience from playing today," xavi8k said.
Chronicle was self-aware about his unexpected Neon pick.
"On the agents I'm most uncomfortable with I expected I will not perform super good... but I just destroyed people on the map. Sometimes that's just the randomness of the game, but I also have a lot of things to improve on," Chronicle said.
Finnish player Jamppi was Vitality's star, finishing the series with 60 kills and an ace in his first international match since 2023.
He said the team utilized new tactical setups made possible by over a month of preparation and that the players left past issues with roles and maps behind to fully unite for the tournament.
Jamppi also highlighted the unique atmosphere of the Champions tournament, where the scale of the stage and fan support significantly boost motivation.
Team Vitality's next opponent in the fight for a playoff spot will be Brazilian squad LOUD.
