DarkZero Esports

Founding and Corporate Evolution

DarkZero Esports was established in 2018 by founder and initial CEO Zachary Matula, a former trader and private equity investor. The organization set up its base of operations in a facility in Las Vegas. In September 2021, leadership changed when Don Kim, the former CEO of TSM, took over as DarkZero's CEO.

The organization built a network of commercial partnerships, including a one-year deal in April 2021 with Respawn Products to become its exclusive gaming furniture provider. An earlier partnership with the aim training software Aim Lab began in October 2020. For merchandise, DarkZero worked with the UK-based company Raven, handling apparel design and production, and took an ownership stake in that company. A partnership with Resorts World Las Vegas was announced in August 2021.

The most significant corporate move came in December 2025, when DarkZero announced the full acquisition of the established esports brand NRG Esports. The deal saw DarkZero's existing rosters, except for its Rainbow Six Siege team, move to represent NRG from 2026 onward. NRG's branding and rosters were maintained, with Don Kim becoming CEO of NRG Esports and former NRG CEO Andy Miller staying on as an advisor.

Rainbow Six Siege: A North American Powerhouse

DarkZero entered competitive Rainbow Six Siege in November 2018 by acquiring the roster of SK Gaming. The team quickly found success in North America, winning the tenth season of the Pro League in 2019 and the North American August Major in 2020.

The organization's first international major victory came at the Charlotte Major in 2022, where the roster featuring Hyper, Ecl9pse, njr, Panbazou, and Canadian defeated Astralis. The team remained a consistent contender, securing its seventh international tournament berth since early 2023 by winning a North America League semifinal against M80 in October 2024 to qualify for the BLAST R6 Major Montreal. That series was won 2-1, with a strong performance on Border, a narrow loss on Chalet, and a decisive comeback on Clubhouse.

The roster underwent changes in March 2025. Following the second retirement of player Beaulo and the release of Elian kobelax Rodriguez due to subpar performance, DarkZero added Canadian flex player Zachary SpiriTz Dionne and British fragger Ben CTZN McMillan. Despite these adjustments, the team faced a setback in May 2025 by failing to qualify for the playoffs of the 2025 Rio RE:L0:AD international event after a 6-8 loss to G2 Esports on the map Bank.

The Apex Legends Championship Era

DarkZero's most celebrated competitive chapter began in July 2022 when it signed the recently dissolved Reignite Apex Legends roster. The all-Australian trio of Zer0, Genburten, and Sharky were the reigning ALGS Split 2 playoff champions from Stockholm. That playoff win had required a substitute, as Genburten tested positive for COVID-19 on the first day and was replaced by British loan player Jmw.

Their signing was immediately followed by a victory at the 2022 ALGS Championship, where they won $500,000 by outlasting teams like TSM and OpTic in a chaotic final match against Spacestation and GMT. The win marked a second consecutive title for the trio, and it happened so quickly that DarkZero had not yet updated its website with player bios.

Considered favorites alongside TSM in ALGS Year 3, the team acquired head coach Jaimson PVPX Moore in November 2022. After Sharky left in April 2023, the team first used RamBeau as a substitute, a move met with controversy from other professionals. Following the Pro League regular season, DarkZero permanently acquired Rody Xynew Geissler, with Zer0 and Genburten citing his communication skills and game brain as key reasons. With Xynew, DarkZero won the 2023 ALGS North American Regional Finals. After dropping PVPX for coach zz just before the Split 2 Playoffs, and after being challenged by Aurora Gaming in the group stage, DarkZero won the ALGS Split 2 Playoffs. They entered the Year 3 Championship ranked second in the Apex Global Power Rankings.

Apex Legends Year 4 and a Core Roster Departure

For the 2023-24 ALGS Year 4 season, publisher Electronic Arts announced DarkZero as one of 12 partner teams, granting them support from EA and developer Respawn Entertainment. Coach zz quelled rumors the team would return to the APAC region.

The year brought roster shifts. In January 2024, DarkZero signed Nicholas Sikezz Odom, who had left XSET stating he had another spot lined up. Shortly after, Xynew joined Spacestation Gaming. In February, the organization also assembled an all-women's roster called DZ Eve, with players Renee, Scarlita, and Samuraisky.

Competitively, DZ finished first in the 2024 ALGS Split 1 Pro League standings for North America. TSM's ImperialHal referenced DarkZero as their rivals heading into the Split 1 Playoffs. DarkZero was one of the first two teams to reach match point in those playoffs but ultimately lost to Reject Winnity.

The team's core dissolved in May 2024. It was announced that Zer0 and Genburten would join ImperialHal to form a superteam for Split 2. By May 28, it was confirmed the Saudi organization Team Falcons had signed the trio, ending their time with DarkZero. In response, DarkZero released Sikezz, coach zz, and analyst Privacy as it re-evaluated its Apex Legends program.

Valorant: A Brief and Intermittent Venture

DarkZero first entered Valorant in June 2021 by signing the Kooky Koalas roster. This initial lineup included Kyle ScrewFace Jensen, Yannick KOLER Blanchette, Nick Harmon Harmon, Adam Ange Milian, and Andy Andersin Collins, with Zack huuaw Solomon as coach.

The organization introduced a largely new roster in April 2022, featuring ScrewFace, Ange, Trick, drone, and ZexRow, with neilzinho as head coach. Despite this refresh, DarkZero found little competitive success in the title. By July 2022, just over a year after its initial entry, the organization announced it was exiting the Valorant scene, though it stated it hoped the departure would be temporary.

The organization eventually returned to the game in June 2024 by signing the Turtle Troop roster. This new lineup consisted of Brenden Stellar McGrath, Corey Corey Nigra, Brandon Bdog Sanders, Matthew Wedid Suchan and Jack Add3r Hayashi.

Organization Structure and Other Titles

Beyond its flagship teams, DarkZero has demonstrated a strategy of selective expansion. The organization also fields competitive rosters in other games, including League of Legends and Marvel Rivals.

Its broad competitive footprint, combined with the strategic acquisition of NRG Esports, positions DarkZero as an organization with significant influence. The 2025 acquisition specifically allowed DarkZero to consolidate its non-Rainbow Six Siege teams under the well-known NRG brand while maintaining separate competitive identities.
