PSG Talon

Foundation and First Title

Riot Games announced Talon Esports as a founding member of the new Pacific Championship Series on 19 December 2019. The organisation built its first roster around top laner Su 'Hanabi' Chia-hsiang, formerly of Flash Wolves. They were joined by South Korean jungler Kim 'River' Dong-woo and mid laner Kim 'Candy' Seung-ju, while the bot lane featured Wong 'Unified' Chun-kit and Ling 'Kaiwing' Kai-wing from Hong Kong Attitude. In their inaugural 2020 spring split, Talon Esports finished third in the regular season. They advanced through the playoffs, defeating ahq eSports Club twice, including a reverse sweep, before winning their first PCS title in a finals victory over Machi Esports.

On 18 June 2020, Talon Esports announced a partnership with PSG Esports, rebranding the team as PSG Talon. For the summer split, they brought in Park 'Tank' Dan-won as a substitute mid laner, who became the starter after Candy's departure on 9 July. PSG Talon again finished third in the regular season and reached the summer finals, securing qualification for the 2020 World Championship. They lost the final to Machi Esports, entering Worlds as the PCS's second seed.

Worlds Debut with a Patchwork Roster

PSG Talon's first World Championship appearance was marked by significant visa problems. Before the play-in stage, it was revealed that starting jungler River and mid laner Tank could not attend. The team secured emergency loans, bringing in Hsiao 'Kongyue' Jen-tso and Chen 'Uniboy' Chang-chu from ahq eSports Club. Bot laner Unified was also unable to participate initially, leading to a loan for Chen 'Dee' Chun-dee from Machi Esports.

Despite fielding three substitutes, PSG Talon performed strongly. They won their first two play-in matches, including an upset over group favourites LGD Gaming. The team topped their group by winning a tiebreaker against the Unicorns of Love, advancing to the main event. Placed in Group B with DAMWON Gaming, JD Gaming, and Rogue, PSG Talon finished third with a 2-4 record, ending their tournament run. After the season, Tank departed and was replaced by veteran mid laner Huang 'Maple' Yi-tang in December 2020.

Establishing Domestic Dominance

The 2021 season confirmed PSG Talon as the PCS's top team. They finished first in the spring regular season, losing only one game, and swept through the playoffs to win their second PCS title. This qualified them for the 2021 Mid-Season Invitational. Before MSI, Unified was ruled out due to a pneumothorax. Beyond Gaming owner Xue 'Dinter' Hong-wei offered his bot laner, Chiu 'Doggo' Tzu-chuan, on loan for the tournament, a move approved by Riot Games.

At MSI 2021, PSG Talon placed second in their group and third in the rumble stage, advancing to the knockout semifinals where they were eliminated by Royal Never Give Up. Back in the PCS summer split, PSG Talon completed an undefeated regular season. Their playoff run was challenged by Beyond Gaming, who knocked them to the losers' bracket, but PSG Talon fought back to win the finals and secure a direct spot in the 2021 Worlds main event. There, they finished third in Group C and did not advance. After the season, River left for the LCS and Maple for the LPL.

Roster Evolution and Continued Titles

For 2022, PSG Talon replaced River and Maple with Lee 'Juhan' Ju-han and Park 'Bay' Jun-byeong from Nongshim RedForce Challengers. The team won the 2022 spring split, claiming their fourth PCS title and a spot at MSI 2022. At that tournament, they placed second in their group but finished fifth in the rumble stage. Following this performance, Juhan and Bay were replaced in June by South Korean players Jeong 'Burry' Seung-hwan and Kim 'Gori' Tae-woo.

PSG Talon finished first in the 2022 summer regular season but was eliminated by Beyond Gaming in the losers' bracket semifinals. This marked the first time the team missed a PCS final and a World Championship. In response, PSG Talon undertook a major rebuild for 2023, dropping its entire roster. They signed an all-Taiwanese lineup featuring Huang 'Husha' Tzu-wei and Tsou 'Wako' Wei-yang from Beyond Gaming, Chen 'ubao' Chang-chu from J Team, and Lin 'Woody' Yu-en from Deep Cross Gaming. Substitute Huang 'Azhi' Shang-chih was promoted to starter, and the organisation moved its headquarters from Hong Kong to Taipei.

The All-Taiwanese Era and Final Triumphs

The new roster immediately succeeded, winning the 2023 spring split after signing former LPL jungler Yu 'Junjia' Chun-chia. They swept Frank Esports, a team featuring former PSG Talon players Pretender and Kaiwing, for their fifth PCS title. At MSI 2023, they were swept by G2 Esports in the play-in qualifiers and later lost to Golden Guardians, finishing ninth. In the 2023 summer split, PSG Talon again finished first and won their sixth PCS title by defeating CTBC Flying Oyster, qualifying for Worlds.

At the 2023 World Championship play-in stage, PSG Talon swept Rainbow7 and LOUD to advance as the top seed from their bracket. In the main event qualifier, they took a 2-0 lead against Europe's Team BDS but were reverse swept, a rare result in Worlds history. For the 2024 season, PSG Talon replaced Wako with veteran bot laner Lu 'Betty' Yu-hung. The team adapted to a revamped PCS format, finishing second in the regular season and winning the spring playoffs for their seventh title. They followed this with an eighth PCS title in the summer split, earning a place in the new League of Legends Championship Pacific (LCP).

Partnership Turmoil and Abrupt End

PSG Talon's transition to the LCP was unstable. On 5 January 2025, PSG Esports ended its partnership with Talon Esports in League of Legends, with Talon retaining the LCP slot. However, on 15 July 2025, the organisations announced a renewed partnership, rebranding the team back to PSG Talon. The deal included the re-signing of mid laner Maple, who had retired after the 2024 season.

This revival lasted only a short time. The organisation was soon removed from the LCP. The official reason was financial insecurity and a failure to pay players and coaches in a timely manner, bringing a sudden and inglorious end to the team's five-year run.

Legacy in the Pacific Region

PSG Talon's competitive record in the PCS was strong. When the PCS was demoted from tier-one status, the team held eight of the league's ten championships. They qualified for the World Championship five times and for the Mid-Season Invitational four times, serving as the Pacific region's most consistent international representative for years.

The organisation demonstrated a capacity for strategic reinvention, successfully integrating Korean imports early on and later building a championship-winning, all-Taiwanese roster. Key players like Hanabi, Unified, and Maple became synonymous with the team's success. However, what the team is remembered for is complicated by its financial collapse, which underscored the volatility behind the scenes of a regionally dominant esports organisation.
