LoL Worlds 2026 Play-In Stage Opens With Cloud9 Kia vs. Karmine Corp

Riot Games announced that the 2026 League of Legends World Championship will begin on October 16 at 3:00 a.m. KST with a Play-In Stage featuring four teams competing for a single spot in the main event.

The opening match will see North America's Cloud9 Kia face EMEA's Karmine Corp at the Riot Games Arena in Los Angeles.

All matches in the Play-In Stage will be best-of-five series under a double-elimination format, running from October 16 to 19.

Both teams in the opening match feature Korean players in their top and mid lane positions.

Karmine Corp fields top laner "Canna" Kim Chang-dong and mid laner "kyeahoo" Kang Ye-hoo, both LCK veterans.

Cloud9 Kia's roster includes top laner "Thanatos" Park Seung-gyu and mid laner "Loki" Lee Sang-min.

Karmine Corp is making its World Championship debut after finishing as runners-up in both the LEC Versus season kickoff event and the Spring Split earlier this year.

Cloud9 Kia finished the LCS Spring Regular Season in first place with an undefeated 7-0 record and secured its Worlds qualification by defeating LYON 3-1 in the Summer Playoffs.

The second Play-In match will see Brazil's FURIA take on the Asia-Pacific's MVK Esports at 8:00 a.m. KST on October 16.

FURIA qualified for the Mid-Season Invitational as the CBLOL Split 1 champions and enters Worlds as Brazil's second seed after finishing as runners-up in Split 2.

MVK Esports earned its spot by finishing third in LCP Split 3 and accumulating championship points throughout the season.

The single team advancing from the Play-In Stage will join 15 others in the Swiss Stage, which begins on October 24 in Allen, Texas.

The Swiss Stage will feature 16 teams, with matches primarily being best-of-one.

Qualification and elimination matches in the Swiss Stage will be played in a best-of-three format.

Teams will face opponents with matching win-loss records, with the eight teams that first achieve three wins advancing to the Knockout Stage.

Teams that accumulate three losses will be eliminated.

Representing the LCK, Gen.G, Hanwha Life Esports, T1, and Dplus KIA will begin their campaigns in the Swiss Stage.

LCK teams have won 10 of the 15 previous World Championships.

If an LCK team wins this year, it will extend the region's championship streak to five consecutive years, a run that began in 2022.

The Knockout Stage, from the quarterfinals through the finals, will be played in a best-of-five format.

The quarterfinals and semifinals will be held in Allen, Texas.

The Grand Finals are scheduled for November 15 at 4:00 a.m. KST at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Redington Cybersport reported in October that the total prize pool for the 2026 League of Legends World Championship will be $5 million, matching last year's record amount.

Detailed information regarding tournament schedules, matchups, and broadcasts can be found on the official LoL Esports website.
