New Halo Novel 'Parasite's Wake' to Release October 20

A new Halo prequel novel, Halo: Parasite's Wake, is set for release on October 20, 2026.

The book, written by Tim Lebbon and published by Gallery Books, covers the initial Flood engagement on Installation 04, the setting of the original Halo: Combat Evolved.

Rather than following the Master Chief, the story is told from the perspective of regular UNSC Marines.

The protagonist is Staff Sergeant Marvin Mobuto, a minor character from the 2003 novel Halo: The Flood by William C. Dietz who returns with a leading role.

The official summary states the story begins in 2552 as the planet Reach falls to the Covenant and the UNSC Pillar of Autumn flees into slipspace.

2552. As the planet Reach falls to the alien alliance known as the Covenant, a lone human ship, the UNSC Pillar of Autumn, fled into slipspace and has arrived at a place that could change the course of this decades-long war. An ancient, mysterious ringworld: Halo.

With human forces scattered, Mobuto must lead his fellow crewmates, who are survivors from the ship's brig, back to the Autumn's crash site.

Desertion, drunk and disorderly, and murder are only a few of the charges that Mobuto's squad carries, and keeping them in line might prove to be just as difficult as surviving the zealous, entrenched Covenant warriors who believe they have found the gateway to paradise.

The summary adds that as war rages for control of the installation's weapons and secrets, a far more terrible threat is unleashed.

But as war rages across the ring's landscape for control of the installation’s weapons and secrets, a far more terrible threat from deep within Halo’s underworld is hellishly unleashed that transforms this conflict into a desperate battle of survival for UNSC and Covenant alike...

The Halo franchise remains one of gaming's most valuable IPs nearly 25 years after its debut on the original Xbox.

The series established itself as a gaming powerhouse under Bungie throughout the 2000s.

As its original developer moved on and 343 Industries took the reins, a succession of poorly received titles has caused its popularity to dwindle.

When a new Halo release arrives, gamers still pay attention, but perhaps not with the same fanfare it had throughout the 2000s.

The release comes as the Halo series is in a precarious situation.

A few weeks ago, Xbox announced that Activision will develop the next Halo game, and Halo Studios has since suffered mass layoffs.

Ripping the series from the hands of the studio created to helm it hints that the series seriously needs a hit.
