343 Industries has published a detailed canon Q&A addressing lore questions stemming from the release of the anniversary remake Halo: Campaign Evolved.

The studio confirmed that where the remake differs from the 2001 original, the original game's events take canonical precedence.

"All of these are part of Halo’s core canon, and where there are differences or contradictions we lean on the source that makes the most holistic sense," the studio said in its Canon Fodder blog.

As an example, it cited the mission Two Betrayals, where the Master Chief's method of overloading Alpha Halo's pulse generators was changed in Campaign Evolved.

"In a case such as this, the original takes canonical precedent," the studio said.

Similarly, the Longsword model featured would canonically be the original C709 to align with the novel Halo: First Strike, rather than the C708 seen in the remake.

The studio stated that new story elements, such as Captain Jacob Keyes asking the Master Chief to ensure his daughter Miranda gets his service pistol, are additive to existing canon rather than replacements.

It also addressed a fan question about the presence of Flood Tank forms on Alpha Halo, a form typically associated with a later, coordinated stage of Flood development.

"That is indeed correct and nothing has changed on this front," the studio said, explaining that a variety of Flood specimens, including pure forms, were contained on Forerunner installations and broke out during the outbreak.

Another question focused on the Mark IV armor having energy shields in the remake, a technology famously integrated with the later Mark V platform.

The studio pointed to multiple established lore sources confirming the use of experimental prototype energy shield modules on Mark IV as early as 2531.

These sources include Halo Wars, Halo: The Essential Visual Guide, armor descriptions in Halo: Reach, and the short story Hungry Buzzards included with the premium edition of Campaign Evolved.

"We of course do want to acknowledge that in a perfect world there would be a different gameplay system for the Mark IV armor, but design and production realities do not necessarily allow for the creation and implementation of such a system," the studio said.

It also denied retconning the origins of Covenant species seen in Halo 4 and Halo 5, stating divergent designs are treated as different phenotypical variations.

"What the Minister of Harmony sought from these specimens… well, that’s San’Shyuum business. But we can indeed confirm that he was not their 'creator' in any such sense," the studio said.

The blog post ended by teasing a future deep dive into the Sacristan Order, a zealous group formed in the Covenant's foundational years devoted to religious orthodoxy.
