Trump

Early Life and Transition to Gaming

Jeffrey Shih was born on June 28, 1987, in the South Bay area of San Francisco. An only child, he pursued higher education at New York University's Stern School of Business, graduating in 2009 with a bachelor's degree in management and finance. He then began working at a bank.

In his free time, Shih started streaming himself playing StarCraft II. His stream quickly gained traction, averaging several thousand concurrent viewers. He chose his nickname, Trump, based on the verb meaning to supersede or outdo. The success of his streaming venture eventually led him to quit his banking job to pursue content creation full time, supported by Twitch's partnership program.

Pioneering Hearthstone Career

Jeffrey Shih began playing and streaming Hearthstone during its beta phase, becoming a foundational figure in the game's community. On October 13, 2013, he made esports history by signing with Team Razer as the world's first professional Hearthstone player. His stream was known for its educational value, with his decks often serving as examples for new players.

His influence was formally recognized in the 2013 Blizzard Stream Awards, where he won the Most Educational Stream category and placed second for Favorite Hearthstone Stream. Blizzard Entertainment itself cited streamers like Shih as a validation of their game's monetization model, as he demonstrated it was possible to reach the highest ranks without spending money.

At his peak, Shih was described as the world's most famous Hearthstone player, regularly attracting over 20,000 concurrent viewers during his lengthy, daily streaming sessions.

Team Affiliations and Tournament Play

Shih's professional team journey in Hearthstone began with Team Razer. In July 2014, he joined the newly formed Hearthstone roster of the prominent esports organization Team SoloMid (TSM). He competed with TSM for nearly three years before leaving in March 2017 to sign with Tempo Storm as both a player and content creator. His partnership with Tempo Storm concluded in October 2018.

His competitive results include a top-eight finish at the 2015 Hearthstone World Championship Americas Championship. Beyond Hearthstone, Shih previously played StarCraft II for teams Legion and Vega Squadron.

Later Career and Streaming Focus

After his tenure with Tempo Storm, Trump continued as a prominent independent streamer. While Hearthstone remained his primary game for over eight years, he has since expanded his streaming content to include Age of Empires 4. His consistent presence and analytical style have maintained a dedicated audience.

According to player profiles, his recorded esports earnings total over $106,000 from 46 tournaments across his career. He moved from the San Francisco Bay Area to Austin, Texas, in June 2016, where he continues to produce content.

Legacy and Impact

Trump's legacy is defined by his role in legitimizing Hearthstone streaming and esports in its earliest days. By leaving a stable finance career, he helped pave the way for streaming to be seen as a viable profession. His educational, value-oriented playstyle earned him the community moniker The Mayor of Value Town.

He demonstrated that high-level success could be achieved through skill and understanding rather than financial investment, a principle that resonated deeply with the game's community and developers alike. As one of the first players to secure a professional contract for Hearthstone, his career marked a significant milestone in the game's competitive history.
