KarlTzy

Early Life and Path to Pro

Karl Gabriel Nepomuceno was born on August 22, 2004, in Imus, Cavite, Philippines. His journey into professional gaming was met with significant resistance from his parents, Gabby and Karina Nepomuceno. They were deeply skeptical of the esports lifestyle, concerned about its perceived unhealthy habits and the challenge of balancing it with his education. His mother implemented strict measures like turning off the WiFi and confiscating his phone to steer him away.

Nepomuceno, however, was determined to prove he could succeed as a pro player while staying in school. He viewed changing his parents' minds about the stigma surrounding esports as one of his biggest early challenges. He credited his grandmother, Lola Benny, for her care during his early years while his parents worked overseas. Ultimately, Nepomuceno succeeded in his vow, graduating high school while simultaneously building an internationally acclaimed professional career in the MPL Philippines.

Professional Beginnings and National Team Debut

KarlTzy's professional career began in 2018 when he was scouted for MPL Philippines Season 2 at just 15 years old, joining Finesse Solid as a mid-laner. The team finished fifth in the regular season and made a lower bracket run before being eliminated. The entire Finesse roster was then absorbed by SGD Omega for Season 3, but the team had an underwhelming run, finishing seventh, which marked one of the lowest placements of his career.

His career trajectory changed dramatically in 2019 when he was selected for the Philippine national esports team for the Southeast Asian Games on home soil. At 15, he was one of the youngest competitors in the inaugural MLBB tournament. In the finals against Indonesia, Team Philippines rallied from a 1-2 deficit to win 3-2, with Nepomuceno securing a gold medal and becoming one of the youngest SEA Games medalists.

Rise to Stardom with Bren Esports

Following his national team success, KarlTzy joined Bren Esports. His partnership with David 'FlapTzy' Canon, a player who idolized him and adopted his '-Tzy' suffix, formed the core of the team's success. The duo, nicknamed the 'Tzy Brothers', led Bren Esports to its first MPL Philippines title in Season 6, defeating Smart Omega.

His defining moment with Bren came at the M2 World Championship in 2021. After an early loss sent them to the lower bracket, Bren mounted a run to the Grand Finals for a rematch against Burmese Ghouls. In a dramatic best-of-seven series where Bren fell behind 2-3, KarlTzy delivered clutch performances to help his team win 4-3. This victory earned him his first world title and the Finals MVP award, confirming his status as a premier player. However, subsequent seasons with Bren saw struggles, as the team failed to replicate this international success and faced challenges with team synergy.

Building a Dynasty with ECHO and Team Liquid

Seeking new challenges, KarlTzy departed Bren Esports in late 2021 and joined the newly formed ECHO Philippines, teaming up with players like Tristan 'Yawi' Cabrera and Frediemar '3MarTzy' Serafico. After a period of adjustment in Seasons 9 and 10, where the team finished as MPL runners-up, they qualified for the M4 World Championship.

At M4 in January 2023, KarlTzy achieved a historic feat. Leading ECHO Philippines on a dominant lower-bracket run, they swept the defending champions Blacklist International 4-0 in the all-Filipino Grand Final. Unlike his hyper-carry role at M2, he excelled in a utility-oriented, tank-jungler position, focusing on objective control. This win made him the first player in Mobile Legends history to win two M-Series world championships with two different teams.

The team's success continued under a partnership with Team Liquid, first as Liquid ECHO and then rebranded as Team Liquid PH. They won MPL Philippines Seasons 13, 15, and 16, with the Season 16 title giving KarlTzy a record five MPL championship trophies, the most by any player.

Completing the Legacy at the Mid-Season Cup

Despite his world championships and multiple MPL titles, one major trophy had eluded KarlTzy, the Mid-Season Cup. He had suffered semifinal defeats in 2023 and 2024. This changed in 2025 in Saudi Arabia. Team Liquid PH battled through the knockout stage to reach the Grand Final against the defending champions, Selangor Red Giants OG Esports.

After dropping the first game, Team Liquid won four consecutive matches to secure a 4-1 series victory and the MSC crown. KarlTzy described the win as deeply meaningful, stating it completed his collection of major MLBB trophies. While a teammate won Finals MVP, KarlTzy's leadership and performance as jungler were widely praised. This victory made him one of the few players to have won every major type of championship in MLBB.

Playstyle and Legacy

KarlTzy is known for his mechanical skill, particularly on assassin heroes like Lancelot and Yi Sun-Shin, which became associated with his early career. His evolution as a player is marked by his adaptability, transitioning from a flashy, kill-oriented hyper-carry to a strategic, objective-focused jungler who prioritizes team coordination, as demonstrated during his M4 victory.

His consistency over a seven-year professional career at the highest level of pressure has led fans and analysts to label him the Greatest of All Time in Mobile Legends esports. This status was formally recognized with his induction into the MPL Philippines Hall of Legends in Season 10. With two world titles, an MSC crown, multiple MPL championships, and a SEA Games gold medal, KarlTzy's trophy cabinet is arguably the most complete in the history of the game.
