Willyrex

Early Life and Channel Origins

Willyrex was born Guillermo Díaz Ibáñez on 9 May 1993. His online alias, which would become his public identity, was created years before his YouTube career began. He formed the name when he was around 11 years old for a messenger screen name. He chose 'Willy' as a nickname for the English equivalent of his first name, William, and 'rex' because it is the Latin word for king.

He initially started his YouTube channel with the simple goal of sharing gameplay videos with his friends. Although he enrolled in a Business Administration degree program, he left school after only a few months to dedicate himself fully to content creation on YouTube, a decision that would define his career.

YouTube Career and Monumental Reach

Willyrex operates two primary YouTube channels, named Willyrex and TheWillyrex. As of November 2017, his main channel, TheWillyrex, had achieved a landmark of over 12 million subscribers and accumulated more than 4.35 billion total views. At that time, this made it the third most-subscribed channel in all of Spain and the 75th most-subscribed channel in the world, highlighting his international appeal.

His content is broad, but he is best known for his extensive streams and videos around popular games like Minecraft and Grand Theft Auto V. Reports indicate his combined channels have since grown to command over 35 million subscribers, confirming his status as one of the foundational and most successful Spanish-language creators on the platform. In December 2020, his channel faced a significant but temporary deletion, an event that underscored his prominence in the digital space.

Expansion into Publishing and Game Development

Beyond video content, Willyrex has successfully expanded his creative output into traditional media and software. In a major collaborative project with fellow Spanish YouTube superstar Vegetta777, he co-authored a saga of books titled Wigetta. This venture into publishing allowed him to reach his audience in a new format.

He also ventured into game development. Together with Vegetta777 and another creator named sTaXx, he helped create and release a mobile game called Karmarun. The game was developed for Microsoft, Android, and iOS devices and proved to be a commercial success, being downloaded more than 2 million times. This project demonstrated his ability to leverage his community's trust into successful product launches beyond video platforms.

Personal Life and International Moves

Willyrex's career growth facilitated significant international moves. In 2014, he relocated to Los Angeles, a hub for digital creators. Then, in early 2016, he moved again, this time to the European principality of Andorra.

His personal life also became public knowledge for his fans. In August 2019, he announced his engagement to his girlfriend, Cristina. The couple later shared in August 2020 that they were expecting their first child, marking a new chapter in his life outside of his online persona.

Multi-Platform Presence and Content Evolution

While YouTube remains his primary and most successful platform, Willyrex maintains a robust presence across the digital landscape to engage with his community. He is active on Twitch, where he hosts live streams of games such as Among Us and has participated in and organized events like Minecraft streamer tournaments. This platform allows for more direct, real-time interaction with his audience.

He also uses Instagram, where he directs his millions of followers to his YouTube content and shares glimpses of his life. His broad and strategic reach across multiple platforms, from YouTube to Twitch to social media, allows him to maintain a constant connection with a massive, dedicated audience. This multi-platform approach has kept his role not just as a YouTuber, but as a versatile and enduring figure in Spanish-speaking online entertainment and streaming.
