Houshou Marine debuted on 11 August 2019 as the final member of the hololive Fantasy generation, following Usada Pekora, Uruha Rushia, Shirogane Noel, and Shiranui Flare. Her character is the Captain, or 'Senchou', of the Houshou Pirates. Her official bio presents a humorous twist, stating she does not actually own a ship and is cosplaying as a pirate while using her VTuber career to raise funds to buy one. Her dream is to become a real pirate and go treasure hunting. Her persona is described as a sensual, femme fatale boss who acts like a big sister and sometimes seduces people like a succubus. She is known for her catchphrase, 'Ahoy! Captain of the Houshou Pirates, Houshou Marine here! Keep 'er steady!'

Her journey into VTubing began with an interest sparked by early pioneer Kaguya Luna. She became a fan of Nijisanji's Tsukino Mito, which led her to entertain the thought of becoming a VTuber herself. She cites Hololive's Shirakami Fubuki and Minato Aqua as direct inspirations for her decision to audition. Her Live2D avatar was designed by artist Akasa Ai and rigged by Ilie Tou, creating the visual foundation for her pirate character.

Houshou Marine's growth on YouTube has been record-setting. On 10 January 2024, she reached 3.01 million subscribers, surpassing Kizuna AI to become the most-subscribed VTuber from Japan. This milestone was followed by an even greater one on 5 May 2025, when she reached 4 million subscribers. This achievement made her the second Hololive talent to hit that mark after Gawr Gura from Hololive English. These numbers confirmed her status as the most-subscribed active VTuber on YouTube worldwide and the second most-subscribed overall in most metrics.

Her impact extends beyond subscriber counts into mainstream Japanese media. In December 2023, she performed at the annual FNS Music Festival by Fuji TV, becoming the first VTuber ever invited onto the prestigious music show. This was a significant moment of validation for the virtual entertainment industry. Her gaming collaborations are extensive, with appearances in titles like Neptunia Virtual Stars, Touhou Spell Bubble, Rakugaki Kingdom, and Valkyrie Connect. A notable inclusion was the 2023 game Truth of Beauty Witch -Marine's treasure ship-, which incorporated her pirate theme directly. She has also participated in Hololive events at major gaming festivals like DreamHack Melbourne in 2024.

Community Persona and Recurring Themes

Marine's relationship with her audience is built on a foundation of shared humor and inside jokes.
