How a Banned Gambler Built CS2's Leading AI Coaching App with 1 Million Downloads
iTero founder Jack Williams reveals how his betting algorithms evolved into GIANTX's scouting tool and top-tier CS2 coaching platform.

What began as a banned gambler's side project has become one of CS2's most influential training tools. iTero, the AI-powered coaching app now owned by LEC organization GIANTX, recently surpassed one million downloads after explosive growth following its 2024 acquisition.
From Banned Bettor to Esports Innovator
Founder Jack Williams never planned to revolutionize CS2 training. The former Deloitte AI engineer initially developed predictive models to exploit inconsistent esports betting odds during COVID lockdowns. His systems analyzed draft phases to identify mispriced outcomes, leading to consistent wins - and eventual bans from every UK betting site.
"I noticed the betting odds weren't moving once the draft was locked in, which struck me as odd," Williams explained. "Everyone in the scene knows the draft matters - it's not a perfect predictor, but it tells you whether a team got strong picks or got counter-picked."
The Pivot to Player Development
After losing his betting accounts, Williams connected with Excel Esports (now GIANTX) co-founder Kieran Holmes-Derby. A visit to Twickenham Stadium, where the esports team trained alongside England's rugby squad, inspired him to repurpose his technology for competitive advantage.
Early attempts to sell AI tools to professional teams failed spectacularly. "Walking into that environment saying 'here's a black-box AI model telling you to pick this champion, trust me' - that didn't land well," Williams admitted. Facing zero sales, he nearly returned to corporate work before Overwolf suggested a consumer-focused approach.
Organic Growth Through Authenticity
The pivot to consumer tools proved transformative. A rudimentary first version attracted 10,000 downloads with unusually high retention rates. Williams credits the focus on genuine utility over monetization: "We never decided to just fill the app with ads for quick revenue. The only thing I cared about was retention."
GIANTX's 2024 acquisition accelerated growth from 200,000 to one million downloads in two years. The Spanish organization's regional connections proved particularly valuable, with Spanish-speaking users growing from 20% to 70% of iTero's base through organic influencer partnerships and localized content.
Professional and Amateur Synergy
The acquisition created unexpected synergies between GIANTX's competitive operations and iTero's consumer product. Pro team insights improved the AI models, while the organization's educational content channels provided massive exposure. Williams notes the mutual benefits: "It's much easier to promote a tool like this when you're backed by an esports team."
The technology has also influenced GIANTX's renowned scouting system. While Williams clarifies the models aren't strictly AI, advanced statistical approaches adapted from iTero's consumer tools have helped the budget-conscious LEC team consistently outperform expectations.
The Future of AI in Competitive CS2
As iTero crosses the million-download milestone, its journey reflects broader trends in esports technology. What began as one analyst's advantage-seeking gamble has become infrastructure supporting both professional teams and aspiring players. The app's growth demonstrates how authentic utility, rather than marketing hype, drives sustainable success in the competitive gaming tools market.
With retention rates far exceeding industry averages and GIANTX's continued investment, iTero appears positioned to influence how both casual and professional players approach CS2 development. As AI tools become increasingly prevalent in esports, Williams' story serves as a case study in transforming niche technical advantages into mainstream competitive resources.
